A Brief History Of Glenmore Primary

Glenmore Primary School was established in 1961. In that year there was an enrolment of 77 learners and a staff of 6. Today Glenmore has over 600 learners and 50 staff members.

The first principal, Miss B Lawrence, designed our badge and explained that “the white heather in the badge was because it reminded me of Glenmore, the biggest glen in Scotland!”

Mrs G Allan assumed duty as principal in January 1962. It was during this year that the first annual swimming gala was held at the Tesoriere Baths, as well as the first Sports Day.

In 1971, Class 1, 2 and Std 1 were moved to the newly opened, Carrington Junior Primary. Our school was re-named to Glenmore Senior Primary. In the same year, building of the school hall was completed.

Our beautiful swimming pool was built in 1981 and Std 5 learners were given the privilege of jumping into the water first!

On 18 September 1985, the school song was sung for the first time during a special assembly. The lyrics were written by a past pupil, Jessie Campbell.

1986 was our Silver Jubilee Year and was celebrated with the planting of new trees on the school grounds.

The original purple and white checked girls’ uniform was replaced with our current green and white dresses from 1988.

1990 marked a new chapter in the history of Glenmore as parents voted to open the school to all races.

Grade 1 to Grade 3 learners from Carrington Junior Primary were relocated back to our school premises in 1994 and the school name returned to Glenmore Primary School.

Over the years, there have been many wonderful additions to the existing school buildings, including the Administrative block, grade 4 classrooms and a new tuckshop facility. One of our latest accomplishments was the Esibayeni Co-Lab, a multipurpose music, languages and computer centre in 2018.

In its mission statement, Glenmore Primary undertakes to provide a meaningful and well-rounded education for the whole child and to be part of the process that creates responsible, respectful and reliable citizens. As it was at the founding of the school, it remains the motivation of all teaching at Glenmore, whether academic or extra mural.

Learners and staff have, over the years come and gone yet they leave their mark, not only by helping to preserve the culture and traditions that make Glenmore what it is, but by forging new and innovative approaches to learning. The school is the sum of all those who have passed through its doors.

Today, 64 years later, Glenmore has an enrollment of 620 learners and 48 staff members.

In response to insecurity in electrical supply, solar panels were installed to ensure unbroken electrical supply.

Successful fundraising help build the state of the art sensory playground.
